Dr. Monika Pogorzelska-Maziarz, PhD, MPH, CIC, FAPIC, FSHEA, FACE, is a Professor at the Villanova University M. Louise Fitzpatrick College of Nursing and Adjunct Faculty at the Thomas Jefferson University College of Population Health. She is an epidemiologist, certified Infection Preventionist, and health services researcher whose work focuses on prevention of healthcare-associated infections, antibiotic stewardship, and the infection prevention and control workforce and infrastructure. Dr. Pogorzelska-Maziarz earned her MPH and PhD in Epidemiology from Columbia University. She has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and has led federally funded research examining infection prevention and patient safety in acute care, home health, and long-term care settings.

An internationally recognized leader in infection prevention and epidemiology, Dr. Pogorzelska-Maziarz has contributed extensively to advancing infection prevention research, workforce development, and patient safety initiatives across healthcare settings. In addition to her research contributions, she has held numerous leadership and editorial roles within the field, including service on the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology Board of Directors and the APIC Research Advisory Panel, as well as serving as a section editor for the American Journal of Infection Control. In recognition of her contributions to infection prevention research and practice, she received APIC’s Elaine Larson Distinguished Scientist Award in 2026. She is also a Fellow of APIC, the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, and the American College of Epidemiology. She has served as an abstract reviewer for the Australasian College for Infection Prevention and Control Annual Conference since 2018.
