If these findings are accurate, it would mean last year HAIs were the 5th leading cause of death in Australia – more than heart attacks and 5 times more than Motor Vehicle accidents.
There is substantial data that estimates up to 40% of nosocomial infections are transferred via contaminated surfaces. The analysis of 177 medical journals (https://bit.ly/3zj0SaX) found that several major pathogens shed from patients contaminating surfaces at concentrations sufficient for transmission, these pathogens survive for extended periods, persist on these surfaces despite attempts to disinfect them and can be transferred to the hands of healthcare workers. The report found that evidence is accumulating that contaminated surfaces make an important contribution to the transmission of C. difficile, VRE, MRSA and norovirus and that improved environmental decontamination can contribute to their control.
