Change Management in Cleaning Processes: Lessons Learned from Implementing a 2-in-1 Solution in a Public Facility
Timna Kerr1, , 1GAMA Healthcare, Notting Hill, VIC, Australia
Background
This study investigated the implementation of a 2-in-1 cleaning solution and process in a large public facility in Western Australia. The 3-step cleaning process (detergent, dry, disinfect) the facility was using was found to be time-consuming, costly and compliance was questionable. For example, the requirement to use a detergent, then dry the surface, then use a disinfectant may triple the time spent performing cleaning and decontamination. Their concerns regarding the impact on business-as-usual activities and resource allocation raised doubts about the proposed change.
Actions
To address these challenges, key stakeholders were identified such as Safety and Quality, Biomedical Engineering and Infection Prevention and Control, and key protocols, behaviours and attitudes were considered. A draft plan was developed, including the conversion of one ward as a pilot of the implementation plan. Access, education, resources, scheduling, and communication were identified as significant drivers in the implementation of the new process.
Results
The results of the implementation were positive with 100% of staff satisfied with the implementation process. Minimal interruption to business-as-usual activities for the Infection Prevention and Control Team and the wider facility were noted.
Conclusion
A successful change is reliant upon several key factors including stakeholder buy-in and the motivation to change. Reluctance, often based on assumptions and previous change management experiences, can be overcome by clear and direct plans for change while leveraging internal and external resources. Employing these strategies can bring positive change to enhance outcomes.
