The National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards require health services have processes for aseptic technique that identify relevant procedures, assess workforce competence, provide training, and monitor compliance. It was noted at our organisation that observation of workforce compliance to aseptic technique was conducted irregularly, with limited review of training gaps. It was determined that engaging staff as representatives of aseptic technique promotion, auditing and education would be beneficial to addressing this.

Benchmarking with other paediatric facilities showed no consistency among the processes for aseptic technique. Modelling from a successful hand hygiene auditor program, a group was formed to champion aseptic technique (the AT Team). All clinical areas performing invasive procedures elected individuals to participate in the collection of audits, education and sharing of results. The AT Team are required to complete competencies, review training and attend quarterly meetings.

The AT Team audit procedures, submitting a minimum of 5 aseptic technique observations a month, per department. Audits are returned to Infection Control for data analysis and redistribution. As of June 2023, there has been 452 aseptic technique observations collected since program commencement October 2022 with results displayed on quality boards. The AT Team is represented by 50 members who share resources locally and address non-compliance themes discussed at quarterly meetings.

The program is still in its infancy and continuing to develop and engage staff. Direct feedback has been taken from the AT Team, allowing for improvements to the audit tool and the development of an electronic tool.
