An unexpected positive urine test for CPO in a resident from a local ARC facility provided an opportunity to build on relationships and processes that were already in place. An outbreak management response was put into action in collaboration with identified key stake holders. As with any outbreak there were learnings that I will share 18 months post the first positive CPO result. The presentation will explore:

  • What is a Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPO)
  • A CPO outbreak management journey
  • Identifying the challenges to prevent ongoing transmission
  • Considerations for the resident’s psychosocial wellbeing in a continuing outbreak
  • How to maintain standard precautions best practice
  • When is a CPO outbreak over
  • Where to from here

Exploring the critical relation between acute care and ARC from an IPC perspective and what has worked well and what hasn’t worked. The focus will be from the experience of the presenter’s 20 plus years within IPC in Southern New Zealand. This will include:

  1. Identifying and acknowledging the differences in IPC between acute and aged residential care.
  2. Applying a risk assessment model to prioritise IPC issues and responses
  3. Understanding the key stakeholders, their roles and the interaction between services in the region
  4. The importance of communication to and from aged residential care
  5. Navigation through an ever-changing health environment.
  6. Supporting IPC practices in a work force that has a high employee turnover.
