Abstract:

Daily rounding by infection prevention staff is a crucial strategy in reducing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) within clinical settings. This proactive approach enables infection preventionists to directly observe routine clinical practices and identify gaps in infection control, including misunderstandings about disease transmission, incorrect use of personal protective equipment (PPE), non-compliance with isolation protocols, missed opportunities for hand hygiene, substandard environmental cleaning, and mismanagement of invasive devices, such as catheters and central lines.

Rounding provides a unique opportunity for delivering immediate, timely feedback to clinical staff. This real time intervention reinforces correct practices, addresses mistakes promptly, and offers appropriate education that clarifies the rationale behind protocols – thereby improving staff adherence and fostering a culture of continuous learning. By maintain a visible and engaged presence in clinical areas, infection prevention professionals promote accountability and shared reasonability for patient safety.

Additionally, rounding strengthens interdisciplinary communication between infection prevention teams and other clinical staff, breaking down silos and encouraging open dialogue. This collaborative environment not only supports evidence-based practices but also nurtures a safety culture where continuous improvement is prioritised.

Far beyond a simple monitoring tool, infection prevention rounding is a strategic-centred practice. It empowers healthcare staff, strengthens care delivery processes, and plays a critical role in preventing infections and improving patient outcomes.
