Biography:
Sue Flockhart is Director of Infection Prevention and Control at Grampians Health, overseeing IPC programs across five hospitals and 15 aged care facilities. A senior nurse with a master’s in nursing and a Graduate Diploma in Infection Control, she is committed to patient safety and mentoring in IPC practice.
Abstract:
Multicampus health services often face challenges in maintaining consistent infection prevention and control (IPC) practices across geographically dispersed sites. This project aimed to implement a unified IPC program across five campuses within a regional health network, supported by a dedicated planner overseeing all locations.
We call it our ‘One GH Action Plan’. A standardised IPC framework was developed and implemented across five diverse healthcare campuses, including acute, subacute, mental health, residential care settings and community programs. The plan featured harmonised policies, shared audit tools, centralised education resources, and regular cross-campus collaboration. The planner played a key role in coordinating efforts, ensuring alignment, and maintaining continuity across sites.
The initiative led to improved consistency in IPC practices, enhanced staff engagement, and strengthened communication between campuses. Positive outcomes were observed in audit compliance, staff confidence, and the uptake of standardised procedures. The presence of a cross-site plan was identified as a key enabler of success. Building resilience and engagement through shared ownership.
The primary challenge was the physical distance between campuses, which occasionally impacted the timeliness of in-person support and training. This was mitigated through virtual meetings and flexible communication strategies.
A coordinated, multicampus IPC program can effectively standardise practices and improve outcomes across a regional health service. Centralised leadership, shared resources, and cross-site collaboration were critical to success. This model offers a scalable and adaptable approach for other health networks seeking to unify IPC efforts across multiple locations.
