Abstract:
Background
The bundle implementation strategy of infection prevention and control (IPC) in the intensive care units (ICU) from the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China are crucial for the safety and quality of health care. Our objective was to investigate the implementation of these strategies at hospitals in 14 provinces of China. We also evaluated the familiarity of healthcare workers with these IPC strategies.
Methods
In accordance with China’s regulation for prevention and control of healthcare associated infection in ICU, we developed a structured questionnaire. Participants including infection prevention and control practitioners, physicians and nurses from ICUs, were invited to the study via e-mail in 2023. The study adopted a stratified sampling approach, selecting hospitals from 14 provinces that were representative of China's administrative division characteristics.
Results
A total of 1,465 hospitals participated in the survey. Over 95% of ICUs implemented IPC measures for ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI), catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI), and multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). Hospital infection control departments conducted compliance supervision of IPC measures in 83.92% of hospitals, with assessments performed at least monthly.
Among 4,248 healthcare workers surveyed regarding their familiarity with IPC measures. 47.79% were highly familiar, 45.57% were partially familiar, and 6.63% had limited or no familiarity.
Conclusion
Most hospitals in China demonstrated satisfactory implementation of IPC measures in ICUs.
