Freeze frame! Improving Hand Hygiene Compliance in Radiology

Radiology units, as non-ward based areas, face unique challenges. Auditors need to understand the interface between the patient and the radiology equipment, and bespoke hand hygiene education that fits the form and function of the unit is required. Hand Hygiene compliance in the Radiology department is frequently below national benchmarks, with prior efforts at addressing low compliance resulting only in short term improvement. Using a multidisciplinary collaborative approach, I engaged with senior Radiographers and nursing staff to develop photographic prompts delineating patient zones for each distinct area of the Radiology unit. Following this, targeted education sessions were developed and implemented in conjunction with radiology unit hand hygiene online training engagement optimisation. I will be analysing data over the following months and preparing a presentation about this quality improvement activity and the compliance outcomes in order to share learnings with my peers.
