Background
Infection prevention and control (IPC) is a specialised profession that requires knowledge and skills to implement the necessary evidence-based IPC practices in a health facility. Academic IPC professional development opportunities are available; however, a newly appointed IPC professional may require basic knowledge in some core competencies at the start of their role. This education is critical for a novice IPC professional, especially if they are the sole IPC professional. To address this gap, the New Zealand Infection Prevention and Control Nurses College (IPCNC) developed a short on-line course, called the Fundamentals of Infection Prevention and Control Programme.

Actions
Adapted from an existing Canadian IPC programme, the course consists of 10 learning modules, covering fundamental IPC competencies. Learners work through the self-directed workbooks over a four month period in cohorts of six, supported by an experienced IPC mentor. The course is free of charge for IPCNC members.

Results
Since December 2020, 25 cohorts have completed the course. Around half of those completing the course work in an IPC role in public hospitals with the rest from primary care, private surgical hospitals and clinics, community care, and residential care. The current programme has eight mentors and a programme coordinator.

Conclusions
This programme has been successful in supporting novice IPC professionals across the continuum of healthcare in New Zealand. Recent industry sponsorship has facilitated ongoing free registration for members. A second review of the workbook content is due and will consider a more specialised pathway for aged care.
