The rapid global spread of MROs, such as carbapenemase producing enterobacterales (CPE), poses a profound threat to healthcare systems worldwide. New and novel approaches to treatment and prevention are required to tackle this challenge.
Such approaches include using genomics to tailor antibiotic treatments, understanding the role of commensal microbes in protecting from MRO colonisation, the use of highly targeted bacteriophages, and addressing the need for novel approaches and incentives to drive novel antimicrobial agent development.
