Abstract

The One Health approach aims to sustainably optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems. Australia is applying the One Health approach to our National Antimicrobial Resistance strategy for the prevention and control of infections and the spread of resistance. Our interim Centre for Disease Control has been founded on One Health principles given the interdependence of health systems. This presentation will illustrate the broader health systems and workforce that require evidence-based IPC and training to avoid the increasing risk of pathogen spillover. Case examples associated with dog-mediated rabies, avian influenza and antimicrobial resistance will be shared to illustrate how health professionals across multiple One Health sectors can connect and even integrate systems to exchange knowledge and information including risk communication for effective infection prevention and biosecurity.
