Abstract:

The National Hand Hygiene Initiative was established by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Healthcare in 2008 as a multimodal approach to improving healthcare worker compliance in Australia. The Commission is reviewing aspects of the National Hand Hygiene Initiative to ensure that it continues to be a quality improvement toolkit that is relevant to the breadth of the healthcare workforce and the different settings where care is delivered. The role and impact of direct observational auditing is of particular interest in the context of increasing priorities and demands across the health system.
