Kathy Dempsey

Kathy is NSW chief Infection prevention and control practitioner (ICP) and healthcare associated infection (HAI) advisor at the Clinical Excellence Commission (CEC), Sydney, Australia. The CEC is the lead agency for Infection prevention and control (IPC) and Healthcare associated infection (HAI) patient safety program across NSW Health. Kathy with her team has responsibility  for the strategic direction and support for IPC and HAI reduction across NSW Healthcare with key responsibility for leading the COVID-19 IPC response for NSW. Kathy contributes nationally and internationally on a number of expert advisory committees supporting IPC and HAI. Kathy has contributed to a number of publications in IPC .

Kathy has previously served as a board director on the Australasian college of infection prevention and control (ACIPC) and chair of the professional and credentialling standards (PaCS) committee, remaining a member on PaCS and a current member of the Editorial Board for Infection, Disease and Health.. Kathy has extensive, broad expertise with lived experience in Infection Prevention and Control in Clinical Practice, with additional experience in translational and non-healthcare IPC and particular experience in biocontainment ,outbreak management and multi-model IPC. Kathy has been recognised for her leadership and expertise receiving a number of awards and acknowledgements, notably the highest from the Australasian college – the Claire Boardman medal for leadership in IPC, 2022.
