Basic principles of infection prevention and control and environmental cleaning are integral in preventing the spread of pathogenic organisms and stopping infections from occurring. Although it is recognised that the level of risk posed to staff and patients in office-based practices may vary depending on the setting, some pathogenic organisms may persist in the environment for days, weeks and even months, presenting an ongoing risk for transmission and acquisition.
Despite advances in technology, cleaning by hand remains an essential component in breaking the chain of infection. A crucial component of this is ensuring that best practice of cleaning is adhered to and that products are simple to use and have proven efficacy and realistic contact times against targeted pathogens.
By educating on the basic science behind surface cleaning and disinfection, including the selection of products and best practices, it is hoped that indiviudals will have a better understanding of the vital role they play in infection prevention and feel empowered to promote and improve cleaning compliance and efficacy in their own practice.
